About Us

Get Busy Getting Stronger

Total Fitness Club

Our doors first opened in the late 1950s as “Health Club Spa,” and we have been here ever since. Edward Kissell purchased the club from Herman McCloud in 1989 and the name was changed to Total Fitness. We are the oldest gym in the Tidewater area and have been home to NFL and NBA players, Olympic lifting champs, pro wrestlers, powerlifters, bodybuilders, and even a world champion arm wrestler.

We have helped our members lose hundreds of pounds and get in shape for military service and schools. We have helped others prepare for various collegiate sports such as wrestling, track and field, football, basketball, tennis, and more! While we may not have the most aesthetically pleasing gym or the most advanced equipment, we do have over 50 years of experience and tradition, and most importantly, we know how to get the job done!

KELI HAMMAN

My journey in powerlifting is a testament to my dedication, adaptability, and achievements. It all started in 2017 when I first walked into Total Fitness with aspirations of becoming an Olympic lifter. However, it didn’t take long for my trainers and me to realize that my true strengths and talents lay in powerlifting rather than Olympic lifting. That realization marked the beginning of my incredible career in the sport.

My lifting accolades speak for themselves. I have established myself as a powerhouse in my state while also making an impact on the national and global stage. With double-digit state records to my name, I have consistently demonstrated exceptional strength and skill across multiple powerlifting categories. I have also set several national records, further solidifying my reputation as a formidable athlete.

One of my proudest achievements is holding two squat world records, placing me among the elite powerlifters worldwide. My dominance in the squat is a direct reflection of my relentless dedication to perfecting my craft. Additionally, I made history as the first woman from Total Fitness to win an open title at a National powerlifting event an accomplishment that showcases my competitive drive and talent.

Beyond my personal achievements, I am also a USPA-certified coach and referee. I use my experience to guide and mentor others on their own powerlifting journeys. Many of my clients have successfully competed at the state, national, and even world levels, which is something I take great pride in. My passion for the sport extends beyond lifting, I am committed to helping others succeed and grow in powerlifting.

My journey continues, and I look forward to pushing my limits, breaking new records, and inspiring others to chase their own goals in powerlifting.
